When Your Argument Doesn't Hold Water

I have really been eating up my Bible Study on Wednesday evenings as we go through the series with John Piper on Desiring God.  There is such a correlation between our intentions to praise and worship God and our own REAL joy.  Our connection with our Creator as evidenced through our genuinely giving Him first place in our lives and the ultimate place of value is the center and source of our JOY.

There was a verse we studied last night that really spoke to me about sin...it is a pretty good explanation of how we start to sin and where that leads us and it is different than what we normally think of when we are "rating" certain sins.

My people have committed two sins:  They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
~Jeremiah 2:13~

1. Forsaking GOD...the source of life...our joy, peace, hope, goodness...etc.
2. Digging our own "source" (which really cannot hold water) or "digging" (SLANG) our own creation instead of the creator.

Anything that we crave as a primary desire (when it is not in accordance with God's Will or does not lead us to the ultimate praise of our Creator) can lead us to sin...even good things can do this.  How many times do we try to justify these idols of our time, pleasure, money....by rationalizing the goodness in them?  Sometimes these justifications we have for ourselves don't really HOLD WATER and we aren't even realizing how far away we are from the source of our living water and....how thirsty we are.
