My favorite thoughts from today happened after choir practice when a few people were chatting about our Easter program and about one of the men who may dress like a Roman Centurion. I was joking with his wife about the costume and the sandals with straps when she said that would mean he would have to cut his toenails. EWWWW! TMI! :) But, I thought That's so true....NOW IS THE TIME for all of us to take a close look at our feet! I was thinking about that this afternoon and pondering that I might want to treat myself to a pedicure....but, that is a type of torture for me.
Tonight's lesson in youth group was on serving one another...it had a few activities to show and teach the kids how to depend on one another and serve each other. Toward the end of the session, the speaker had Savannah and another girl from the youth group leave the room and they came back in with towels and a large bowl of water. YIKES! A FOOT WASHING BEFORE MY SPRING PEDICURE? OH, NO! :P Savannah and the other girl demonstrated a foot washing (with a few giggles) while our speaker read the passage of scripture about Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. I was actually a little relieved that I did not have to participate in that tonight...partly because of the pedicure issue....but, mainly because my feet are so ticklish I have actually kicked a sweet Asian lady really hard that was attempting to beautify my toes. (That is why I call it torture....like I have been sent to the island of perpetual tickling...you know!?) That was really awkward....she started talking to another lady in a different language, but they kept looking at me, so I know I was the subject of their conversation.
I was thinking...."How do you say.....
in your language?"
However, the true beauty in a foot washing is not about the shape of our feet, if we have been diligent about clipping our toenails through the winter months, or even how stinkin' ticklish (I HAD to use stinking and ticklish together for feet!) we are....it is about serving and loving others regardless of conditions. Jesus told his disciples, "I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you" John 13:15 When we seek to be served or exalted, we are not pleasing the Lord who promised us that real greatness can only come through a heart that is willing to serve even to the lowliest of actions.
Today's lesson was.....it's always time to serve.
