I read that sixty years ago today Elisabeth Elliot lost her husband, Jim, at the end of a spear along with five other men.
The world was shocked and outraged...the story of the slain missionaries spread like wildfire. Two years after this great loss, Elisabeth wrote a book called Shadow of the Almighty. It did seem like an absurd title for a book describing a horrific tragedy, but she wanted to speak to the meaning of our lives and the truth that death is not the end....it is only a part of God's magnificent plan. Within that plan we find protection....not specifically from suffering or pain (though we will never know how much of that we are actually spared), but definitely and most assuredly from final defeat. We always find victory in Christ.
Romans 8:36-39 reads,
As it is written, "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."
(That was the feeling at the time....that was what was physically happening and what could be seen to the eye....but look what Paul says in response)...
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Nothing Can Separate Me
