I Have An Inkling That God Never Gets Writer's Block

I have enjoyed learning a little more about C.S. Lewis this year (err, I should say last year now, right?).  Particularly, of his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien....can you imagine those two as friends?  I love people watching....maybe that is stalkerish of me, but it is fun to see how people interact with each other.  This is one pair I would have loved to watch relate to one another and banter back and forth.  I think their friendship is one of the best examples of Proverbs 27:17 that I can think of....the iron of their intellects sharpening each other and developing some of the most impactful and widely known works of Christian literature and fiction with such spiritual significance.  You would think their influence and intellect would have been the most essential and appreciated part of their relationship, but Tolkien wrote years after Lewis passed away, "The unpayable debt that I owe to him (Lewis) was not "influence" as it is ordinarily understood, but sheer encouragement.  He was for long my only audience.  Only from him did I ever get the idea that my "stuff" could be more than a private hobby."

They were in a writer's group called the Inklings where they would bring their unfinished works, read aloud to the group and receive feedback.  They would often play a game where they would read some of the worst poetry ever and see who could read it the longest without laughing :)  I WANT TO PLAY!  J.R.R. Tolkien actually brought his unfinished draft of Lord of The Rings to be reviewed by this group.  Isn't it crazy to think about that place in the process of a great work?....where it is just an idea on a page....it is still fragile because it is not "set in stone".  I think I remember reading that it took Tolkien about 17 years to finish Lord of the Rings and the completion was largely due to Lewis' consistent encouragement.

I am thankful God wrote a chapter for these men to become friends, sharpening each other and producing so much thought-provoking and God-honoring literature.

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone.  You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:2-3
