Last week I had an appointment and the lady who was working on some of my paperwork had these really cute glasses on...they were like these black frames and then they had a really subtle paisley design on the sides. I am going to need some reading glasses soon....too many years of staring at a computer screen. I realize I could just keep increasing the font size, but I work with some confidential data, so I don't really want people who are a MILE away to be able to read my screen :) ANYWAY, I decided to ask her where she got her glasses. So, I told her they were super cute and asked where she got them. She hesitated for a bit and then said, "From my eye doctor".....HAHAHA! DUH, I know that, so then I had this awkward battle going on inside. Does she not want to tell me where she got them? Did she not understand my question? Should I keep pressing? Yes....I continued the questioning....so I said..."and where is your eye doctor?" (meaning what store/office...ya know).....she said, "Jonesville." That was one of my favorite AWKWARD conversations of all time....I never got the answer I was desiring, but I just learned a new word today that is related to that situation. It is called swagger jacking....like, hijacking someone's swagger...so, she must have thought I was doing that.... :P
My boss shared some findings from a study that was completed with college students. They were asked to spend about a 30 minutes just looking at Facebook pages for all their friends and after the 30 minutes the researchers asked them some questions. What they found was pretty interesting to me, but not really surprising, I guess. They found that these students felt depressed....kind-of weird, right?....but, when you think about it, it makes sense. They felt like the people they were reading about had way more interesting lives than they did....better stuff and deeper relationships....they started to experience envy and it affected them emotionally.
What we often do not consider when we are reading blogs, or Facebook updates, or Twitter feeds is that we are only viewing the HIGHLIGHT reels. There are plenty of deleted scenes in everyone's day that don't make the final cut :) We need to be cautious of becoming envious....envy means we are not celebrating God's goodness in another's life because we are too busy comparing....and, if we are comparing, we are probably ignoring God's goodness in our own life. I know I am guilty a lot of times.
But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But, if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. ~1 Timothy 6:6-11
