"We'll Always Have Paris"

Or.....fudge!  Yes, we'll wrap our Mackinac Island memories up in some wax paper....we'll bring them home and we will eat them so they stay on our hips forever :P.  My girls are definitely enjoying the memories.

Actually, I do love Mackinac Island....I've always had a bit of a fascination with it since I saw Somewhere In Time as a young girl and it shaped all my views on romance....haha....poor Brad! I even have a daughter named McKenna....that is how impactful it was.  This is a random thing....See Elise McKenna's face....

I saw this picture and thought it was so similar....weird, right?  It's cool how the artist made this!  It drives me a little insane trying to think of both things at the same time...it's almost like I can't...I have to see a person and then I have to see a plant :) Can you see both at the same time?  I think that is part of why I always want to look at it again.

A Room With A View

You know how sometimes you stay at a hotel with a really great view on one side and a parking lot on the other or some random building?....(not the sought after view unless you love watching the seagulls in the parking lots scavenging for scraps...I am sure there are always exceptions :)...this past weekend we stayed at the Grand Hotel for a marriage retreat....there are wonderful views of the lake and Mackinac Bridge from some rooms in the hotel and those are the rooms you hope you get and you anticipate swinging open your curtains and saying, "AHHHHH!" when your senses are greeted with the great expanse. :P  I have to say senses PLURAL because it is at least sight, sound, smell, and feeling that bring you to the WOW of the sensational moment, right?

We were privileged to hear some great words of wisdom throughout our sessions this weekend.  A couple things stuck out to me as takeaways.  One of the concepts was that of being ONE in our marriage.  I know this in my mind, but it is so easy to get away from it when there are issues or disagreements.  Brad and I are in the trying season of parenting and we tend to have different parenting styles and ways of addressing the subject of disciplining and correcting our children.  That can cause me to go into a mode of thinking where I focus on his way verses my way and not on OUR way and, more importantly, not on looking to GOD for the right way.  That is just one example, but there are really so many other complexities in marriage in which it is important to be ONE and not fight against one another with our attitudes and actions.

The other statement that I loved because it cut at my heart....writers like bleeding hearts, you know...those ouch moments.  It was repeated a few times today....that was good because that way I will remember it....it was, "Jesus was right, but He was wronged, and yet he initiated reconciliation." That kind-of reminds me of one of Mother Teresa's famous quotes...the "do it anyway" statements.  I think what both the statement we heard today and what Mother Teresa described is the concept of GRACE.  Grace is an incredible bridge and one which we can keep building if we seek God's HELP to fill us with it so that we can offer it to others despite our circumstances or feelings....especially our spouse and our children.

Mother Teresa's Statements

"People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
FORGIVE THEM ANYWAY.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
BE KIND ANYWAY.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
SUCCEED ANYWAY.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
BE HONEST AND SINCERE ANYWAY.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
CREATE ANYWAY.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
BE HAPPY ANYWAY.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
DO GOOD ANYWAY.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
GIVE YOUR BEST ANYWAY.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God....It was never between you and them anyway."

You won't always get the room with the great view, but you can have this viewpoint!
....and you can toss the seagulls some french fries because they are pretty fun to watch :P

A GRAND Birthday!

At breakfast this morning I was able to get the attention of our waiter at the Grand Hotel to let him know it was Brad's birthday....he was amazing....you should have seen him pour milk from like 3 feet away from a glass...IMPRESSIVE! :)  Anyway, he gave me a nod that he would bring something special for Brad and they made him this gorgeous little dessert :)

We were sitting next to some new friends we just met during our marriage retreat....they were so much fun to get to know....and hilarious on the dance floor.  They knew like two fancy dance steps, so every new song he wanted to be the first on the floor to amaze people with those moves and then retreat back to our table...everyone was very entertained with them.....anyway, the guy wasn't shy at all, so when he found out it was Brad's birthday, he stood up and whistled to get people's attention in the Dining Room and asked a bunch of people to sing to Brad....yes, Brad's face turned a little red :P

Thank you to everyone who called or texted to wish him a very happy birthday!

My Man

I am enjoying this weekend with my sweetheart!  You wanna know how awesome he is?  Tomorrow is HIS birthday and he decided to bring ME to Mackinac Island for a Celebrate Your Marriage event!

We have never been here together...though we have been separately with our girls for field trips.  So, this is a really nice time for us!  I am so blessed to have such a wonderful life partner!

See the pinkish drapes in the background?....Well, our room would probably win first prize for the most flowery wallpaper...big....BOLD (masculine :P) roses....everywhere....and the drapes are pretty bright :)  I was worried earlier that our luggage was lost because it didn't come and didn't come and I HAD FERRY HAIR...not fairy hair like Tinkerbell...nappy, FERRY hair and I was starting to sing the VeggieTales, "Oh, Where Is My Hairbrush?" song.  :)  Luckily, the luggage arrived because I was starting to prep Brad that I may have to somehow make our pink curtains into a lovely evening formal.

Lord prepare me to be a sanctuary
Pure and holy, tried and true
With thanksgiving, I'll be a living
Sanctuary for You

It is you, Lord, who came to save
The heart and soul of every man
It is you, Lord, who knows my weakness
Who gives me strength with thine own hand.

Lead me on, Lord, from temptation
Purify me from within
Fill my heart with Your Holy Spirit
Take away all my sin

Lord prepare me to be Your sanctuary
Pure and holy, tried and true
With thanksgiving, I'll be a living
Sanctuary for You.
