We ate tacos tonight and as we were all getting ready for dinner I heard Karly singing a song....it was to the tune of "Funkytown"....when the lyrics go "talk about it, talk about it, talk about it...".....but Karly was singing "Taco belly, taco belly, taco belly, taco bell-eeeee".....:)!

As a mom, I often think about the things I say everyday to my kids.....like if I recorded the top 10 most frequent things and could play them back....what would those phrases/topics be?
I would hope I LOVE YOU....is at the top. But, I know that dressing for the weather would probably be one of those things. I know that I am reminding a couple of them everyday to think about the weather and to have a coat and gloves when going outdoors. Today, I was taking them somewhere and needed to remind them again about the temperature outdoors. I went through the normal reasons it is a good idea to be prepared for the elements...in case we had an accident or our car broke down and we had to walk somewhere.....and then I added to the normal talk and said, "If we are prepared, we are also ready to help others in need.....it positions us to be able to help those who may not be prepared for what they experience".
That part hit me hard as I drove to our destination and thought about how I should be spiritually prepared everyday.....I wonder if that is one of the top 10 things MY FATHER tries to remind me when I leave the house without my spiritual protection.
I read this devotional today and thought I would share it....
The idea of always being prepared makes me think of the man who lived next door to us when I was growing up. When Mr. Nienhuis came home, he never failed to back his car into the garage. That seemed unusual to me until my mother explained that Nels was a volunteer fireman. If he got a call, he had to be ready to race to the fire station. He backed in so he could leave quickly when he had to report for duty.
To be well prepared is important in so much of life. “If I had 8 hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend 6 sharpening my axe,” said Abraham Lincoln. We prepare for a career by studying. We buy insurance in case of a car accident or a house fire. We even prepare for the end of life by making a will to provide for loved ones.
The Bible tells us we must prepare ourselves spiritually as well. We do that by putting on spiritual armor to protect ourselves from spiritual attack (Eph. 6:10-20); by preparing our minds for holy living (1 Peter 1:13); by making sure we’re always prepared to answer questions about the reason for the hope we possess (3:15); and by ensuring that we are ready for the promised return of Jesus (Matt. 24:44).
How well prepared are you for what lies ahead? Unsure? Ask the Lord for His help and guidance.
When I awake at early morn
To meet the coming day,
I want to be prepared to take
Whatever comes my way. —Simmons
To meet the coming day,
I want to be prepared to take
Whatever comes my way. —Simmons
Spiritual victory comes only to those who are prepared for battle.

Sometimes I think of things like this.....
....like today.....I was getting ready for work and Karly came into the bathroom where I was doing my hair and she was gleaming and ready to burst to tell me something.....she said, "I have to show you what I did!!!!!!"
Backstory time.....Grandma has been helping the girls with some arts and crafts while she has been visiting this week and so Karly had this whole package of heart-shaped gems......BURNING A HOLE.....you know! They are the sticky kind with a foam-like backing on them.
She proceeded to put heart-shaped gems on all the light switches on the main level of our house and they were pretty sticky. I did notice they came off better on the really dirty light switches, but now the place where they were stuck is very clean and the rest of the light switch looks dingy....haha!
Parenting is such a balancing act....I want to teach her things, give her rights and wrongs to understand, but I want her to experiment too...I don't want to stifle the creativity or the spirit, you know. Not saying I learned something profound....just saying I thought about this today.

Enjoyed a day off with my beautiful mom! Yes, that is Banana's Foster :P
Foiled Again!
YAY for the "just stepped out of a salon" close up!
We are celebrating this girl tonight because she came in 4th place for her HOSA photography competition and today they decided to take the top FOUR to the state competition in Traverse City in April. She is very excited about that and now we get to shop for a new and improved camera lens. Anyone having any cool medical procedures done soon?....haha....she has to get some good shots of doctors, nurses,...medical professionals in action.
Ever tried the exercise of putting your name in where it says love?
That definitely helps hold a mirror up to show us where we need some work....and it is extremely important for us to look into this regularly because the Bible says,
By this all men will know you are my disciples, if you love one another. ~John 13:35

Brad started a new job several months ago and he has been at an intense training in Texas last week and will be for the remainder of this week, so I am so thankful for the help I have received from grandparents to get the girls all the places they need to be....I definitely could not do it all by myself. This week I am grateful to have my mom visiting....tonight was hilarious to me because Vannah had Track practice, Kenna had Cheer practice, Karly and Danielle had pirate musical practice and then we had a Chilly Jazz event at the high school where Vannah and Kassi were working as servers....I think my mom is getting a taste of my crazy life....haha! Mom had her own "Painting with a Twist" session at our table with my two pirates and they made these great pictures!

And Praise For The Answer
Praise.....that is something that could unify us if we can see our blessings.....we are not a land of perfection, but we still certainly are a land of blessed opportunity. Within that opportunity there are wonderful freedoms to give, to serve, and to love. The struggle to get it all right is real...but the struggle also makes it all real, right? And, real righteousness can be born through the faithful endurance of the struggle.
Blessings

I love when people say "you look like a million bucks".....and you know you only spent $10....people always tell me I shouldn't say how much I spent, but it is hard to keep that a secret! We found some great bargains at Kellie's in Okemos and Upscale Resale in Jackson. Vannah's dance is a Mardi Gras theme so we will have fun finding an awesome mask for her...I tried to convince her to go for the long black gloves, but I got that look :P I would totally do the gloves with this black dress and a mask....who wants to chaperone with me...haha! She would LOVE that!
They definitely have their own styles :) I love watching them grow up!

God always defends His people....He is our refuge. For that reason, we can surrender to Him....not because we "give up", but for the sweet peace we can experience when we purposefully stop our striving and hand it to Him because of who He is and who we are not.

Do you remember the store County Seat? One of my friends was trying on jeans there once a long time ago, lost her balance with the jeans around her ankles and fell over.....they didn't have wooden doors, they just had curtains on the dressing room so she totally fell out of the dressing room and onto the floor of the dressing room hallway...HA! Whenever I need a good laugh I imagine that :) I thought of that tonight because I had a dressing room mishap. I was enjoying my free time while the girls were at AWANAs and I checked out the 70% off racks at JC Penney....well, I may have gotten stuck in a dress for a little while...hahaha!
No garments were injured :)

We attended the Western Spelling Bee tonight because Danielle had secured a spot as an alternate on her 5th grade team from Parma Elementary. The 5th graders got a late start because a small group of 4th graders were ROCKING every word....seriously, I would never have made it that far....Kenna, Vannah and I were looking at each other like....WHAT? These kids are brilliant! They lasted more than 22 rounds.
As an alternate, we weren't sure if Danielle would be needed or not because that all depended on if all the other kids showed up for the competition. After the 4th grade was finished, I saw her enter the auditorium and stand by the side wall, so I was waving at her, but her principal started speaking to her and I realized they were not just starting to wave at me, but they were waving me over to them....those AHA moments, right?
There were a couple kids who didn't show up for the spelling bee, so they asked Danielle to compete, but she was feeling a lot of anxiety and she was becoming overwhelmed. I tried to give her a quick pep talk, but I could tell my words to challenge her to face her fears of being in front of people and to give this a shot were not the key to my child's heart in that moment....have you ever had those moments with your kids?

You can decide to push them harder toward the goal (which is always my first inclination) or you can realize this one moment of weakness does not define them forever and they may just need you to tell them it's okay, you love them, and hold them for a little while. So, that happened.......and then we all went to get custard.

Wonderful thoughts to consider if you feel misunderstood or are trying to support someone who feels misunderstood........
If you try to do anything worthwhile in this life–love, pursue a dream, grow–then at some point you will be misunderstood. And if you try to live in a way where everyone understands you all the time then you will not stand for anything.
Why, we wonder, at the very moment when I’m saying “yes” to what God has called me to do would this happen? And I think one part of the answer is that when we are in Christ we are a new creation. That means who God has transformed you into has never before been seen in this world. And anytime someone sees something brand new they scratch their heads a bit. In other words, they misunderstand.
When that happens they’re likely to tell us we’re “too much” or “not enough” or that we should change this or that. Listen, friend, if you have leaned in hard to Jesus and learned this is who he wants you to be then don’t listen to those other voices. Because whatever they’re saying is a way to fit you into a box or category or tradition that already exists. And the whole point is that God wants to do something new through you.
Even knowing that, being misunderstood is painful. Someone once asked me, “What’s one of your worst fears in what you do?” And I answered, “That someone would misunderstand my heart.” And it happens from time to time so I’ve had to learn how to respond when it does. I’ll tell you first what I don’t do: Close the doors of my heart. That would be the easiest, safest, and least painful {at least in the short-term} choice. But for the God who stretched his arms out wide on a cross in the ultimate position of heart-opening that sure doesn’t seem like what I’m asked to do.
So instead…
I tell God, “Wow, this really hurts. What do you have to say about this?”
I go to the sources I do really trust–His Word and the safe people in my life. And with those people I ask two things: First, “Will you pray for me?” and second “Is there any truth in this?”
Then depending on the relationship I have with the person who misunderstood me, I either have a heart-to-heart conversation with them or I make any adjustments God and the safe people in my life have revealed are needed then keep going in what I’m called to do. I said in my post on Friday “Love is the most powerful weapon and the only one that heals instead of wounds.” The way you live can speaks louder than any words you might use to defend yourself.
If you let the fear of being misunderstood overcome you then you will sit down in your life so that no one will see you, you won’t be noticed, you won’t be hurt. But if you take “stand” out of misunderstand then all you’re left with is “mis.”
You will miss your purpose in this life.
You will miss opportunities to love.
You will miss some of the pain, yes, but you will also miss so many beautiful adventures with Jesus.
So live in love, friend, especially when you’re misunderstood. And no matter what happens, continue to stand.

I hope you took the opportunity to listen to that :) I found it very inspiring today. I think something that defines a great leader is the hope they have in that view from the mountain top....their belief that a better day is coming and the commitment they make to usher in the "better day"....to fight for it with love.....the kind of love that just keeps loving through it all until all that remains is love.
Martin Luther King, and all who follow his lead to speak the truth in love,
BLESS YOU!

There is a pretty significant U.N. meeting of 70 nations today and they are discussing the future of Israel and of whether to divide Israel into a two-state nation, Israel and Palestine. Please pray.
Eight Years Ago Today
We witnessed a miracle on the Hudson River....do you remember that?
Well, I believe there are still miracles to witness.....and I think there are many miracles possible in our own stories....they just don't always follow our anticipated course.....but, I suppose that is precisely how they become miracles, right?

Do you ever do this to pick between two scrumptious entrees at a restaurant? Okay, so is the "and you are not it"....the one you choose to select or choose not to select?.....and are you ever just not entirely happy with the one you landed on so you have to do it again to get a different result?
No reason.
:P
I heard a really good interview with Jonathan Cahn yesterday.... he talked a little bit about spiritual warfare. He talked about this verse from 1 Peter and why Satan is like a roaring lion. A roaring lion isn't necessarily a lion who is about to attack because usually lions do not roar when they attack, they are quiet. Satan roars because he can't really destroy us....he knows he is powerless over Christians. Satan's only source of influence over us is the deceptive intimidation in his roar because it can convince us to be a weapon against ourselves. He just has to make us believe he has the power so that we lose sight of God and start being consumed by our situation. This fear, doubt, distraction...etc...makes us feel hopeless and causes us to lose faith.
He said something like....What is the difference between a person in a prison cell where the bars are locked shut and a person in a prison cell who believes the bars are locked shut, but they are actually completely unlocked....they will both act the same way.....won't they?
The truth is....if you are hearing the lion roar in your life....if there is a struggle that you are tempted to believe is hopeless.....that is the roar.....it is happening because Satan knows that is a point and place where God could be extremely glorified in your life by your faithfulness and he wants you to lose that opportunity and the wonderful consequences of your faith. His only strategy is to roar and try to get your eyes off of your Savior.
We can defeat him by spending time in the Word of God and on our knees in prayer instead of feeling hopeless about our situation.
Thank goodness for the rare days when I can multi-slack. We just disagreed about the use of the words clump and lump and looked up the definition...haha!
Love how this sleepy puppy is also functioning as a slow cooker :)

I know I am sometimes a word geek....but, I learned something new today about the word ENTHUSIASM. It comes from the Greek word "entheos".....which means "the God within" or "in God".....True enthusiasm comes from God being within us. I think that is a pretty cool understanding! Also, INSPIRATION can mean a drawing in of breath or a sudden feeling of ENTHUSIASM....isn't it awesome to know how these two incredible motivations work together?!! When God is within us, others can draw in the breath of God being within us.....and that is contagious :) I LOVE THAT!

Tonight, I picked up my girls from AWANAs and on the way home Karly said, "Mom, there is a boy at AWANAs who really loves me!".....I said, "Well, how do you know that?"......."when he hugs me he touches my cheeks".......hmmmmmmm......Vannah has been studying for her Health Technician class, so she asked, "Zygomatic or Ischium?" Haha!
"My FACE, people" Karly insisted....
"it must be magnetic because a ball hit me in the head tonight too!"
Van rides can be SOOOO Humerus :)
Tomorrow three of my daughters are trying out for A Pirate's Life For Me....I told them they should try to talk like pirates the rest of the night at dinner tonight. They went to the pantry and grabbed some leftover Christmas candy canes and made hooks for themselves. :)

It just cracks me up that my dog, Kooper, lays around all day like this....all cute and stuff..... but if I lay on the floor to do sit ups, leg lifts or push ups.....he head-butts me and attacks my hair. The random things to look forward to at the end of the day :) Puppy Love!

Maybe you have been in a place in your life where you are running away from God....or maybe you have just been in what feels like a pit and you wonder if God remembers you are there. Today God showed me that He knows right where I am in several different ways....and I am so thankful!!

Vannah ran into my room and said, "MOM....dad is saying I have to stop doing my hair now and clean......LOOK AT ME!"....hahaha....her shirt says Sercombe Trucking by the way.....someone asked me about that, so thought I would clarify :)
I taught Brad some things about Salesforce today since I use that CRM where I work and he will be using it at his new job....that is convenient.....so showed him how to run reports and create tasks for himself in order to follow up with his clients. We spent some time organizing his leads. Glad I could help with some of that.
Then, I got to have dinner with a few friends at The Hunt Club....
but, had to sneak away to be a chaperone for a DAH-TEH.....that is the way we say date when, technically, the person having a date is too young to date :P
But, first chaperones have to stop for ice cream, right?! It is weird when your daughter likes the son of one of your best girlfriends, but it is also a blessing!
Yeah, we're watching you....watching us watching you....haha! Seems like they enjoyed their dah-teh :)

Today's snow reminds me of Narnia....
I sometimes wonder how much of life is a test for us....you know....not that I see it all in a negative way....just curious about how often there are challenges we face where God plans to deepen our faith and our resolve. Not that He doesn't already know how we will respond, but there are definitely hard times and difficult choices to make....there are desires which present themselves along our path that are not in accordance with God's plan for us and I just wonder how much of it is really like the quote above....where God really wants to watch how we will earnestly seek Him even if presented with the things we may believe our heart desires.
"For all find what they truly seek"....that is why we must seek Him with ALL our heart.

So, you know when you feel stuck between a rock and a hard place in a conversation or someone calls you out, but you feel you maybe need to respond.....so you might sometimes say, "So....how 'bout them cubbies"....haha! I was thinking that statement last night and I was like, YES, THAT IS TOTALLY APPROPRIATE FOR RIGHT NOW!....So, HOW 'BOUT THEM CUBBIES, you know?! :)

Had lots of fun tonight with the girls and a bunch of their friends at ALLSKATE! Even got to play a game of Laser Tag....that is sooooo fun....except that it smells like stinky feet in that room, but the fun far outweighs the smell for me! :)
Sporting her new glasses...
And then to end the night.....ahhhhh....
Well....the relaxing bubbles far outweigh the sibling rivalry in the other room...and I am sure they can come to some truce about how much popcorn they are all having in their bowls without my intervention.....hopefully!
